"What a hot summer!! Hopefully we all managed some
sort of success on our plots and have enjoyed
harvesting, eating and sharing our produce. Autumn is
now approaching rapidly, and some very welcome rain
has arrived. Please note that the Thames Water
hosepipe restrictions are still in place so do continue
to use water sparingly.
"Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held in the
new trading hut on Sunday 11 October at 2pm. The
draft agenda will be sent out nearer to the date. We
hope that all plot holders are able to attend.
"Details about how a new committee will be elected
will also be sent out in good time. The present
committee has stated its willingness to continue, yet
nominations for other plotholders who wish to stand
will be welcomed.
"Keep an eye out for communications about the AGM
and the election.

Bat Surveys
"We have been doing sunset bat surveys
on the last Thursday of each month, and
these will continue until October. In
July’s survey we recorded around 70
bats from five species,one of which was
quite rare. August was quieter, but who
knows what we'll find next month! Four
bat boxes are ready to be put up on the
site. These were made by the Age UK
Waltham Forest Shed Project based in
the old library at Chingford Mount."

Wilder About Highams Park
"We have now sourced some quality
local oak. This will be used to make
sculptured seats and tables for our site
and some sculptures in the community.
"These projects are a combined effort by
the Ching Action Group, The HIghams
Park Planning Group and Brookfield
Allotments Association and are funded
from the National Lottery Community
Fund grant we received earlier this

Brookfield Allotments BBQ
"This year's BBQ will be held on Sunday
13 September at 1pm. There will be a BBQ (of
course) and soft drinks, tea and coffee. If you
want to bring alcohol you can. Bring and share
your own sides and salads. Last year some folks
brought along great tasting cakes, desserts etc.
More of these would also be welcomed. There
will be a £6 charge and kids are free. Please
invite family and friends as all are welcome.
Please let us know if you plan to come, and if
you have any dietary requirements, so we can
get the right amount of food and drink."

The Old Trading Hut
"The Old Trading Hut has seen better
days and, as our landlord, the London
Borough of Waltham Forest Council has
asked us to remove it from the site. The
SMT has recently cleared out
years of rubbish in readiness for the
next stage. Plans are being formulated
(risk assessments, method statements
etc.) ready for taking down the hut
safely. Having removed the rubbish and
debris, we found the floor/base appears
to be in great condition. So it should be
fairly straightforward to repurpose this
area for future use with some storage
facilities.
"At the last plot inspection we found that
some plots have trees which have grown
beyond the recommended height as set
out in rule 19: (Trees and large shrubs
should be pruned at the appropriate time
of year to avoid excessive shading to other
plots nearby. The ideal height is 8ft/2.4m
but this will depend on the time of year as
some can grow considerably in a season.
Where mature trees have overgrown extra
time will be allowed to reduce them to a
manageable size ). Autumn is the time to
prune many tree species, but do click
here for advice on the right time for
your trees. Should you have any
difficulties with this, please contact the
SMT who may be able to offer help.
"Once we have some more woodchip,
we aim to organise another work party
to refresh the top paths and keep them
in good condition."
